Large Hope, 2026

porcelain, glaze, underglaze, and screws, 96 x 48 x 0.5 inches

Large Hope (2026) shows a figure trapped in a claustrophobic space, exposed and raw. I made the original drawing for this work in the first weeks of the war in Gaza, immediately after October 7th. It is a nod to Picasso’s Guernica of course, depicting a woman, a mother, trapped and suffering, exposed in every way. Becoming a mother and a caregiver has made me more sensitive to the suffering of others, and the war has, and continues to haunt me daily, thinking of the all the mothers and children suffering in it. However, I titled the work “Large Hope”-  the figure’s hand is seen sticking out of the bottle's opening holding a tool that can be understood as a weapon, a drawing tool, or a sculpting tool. It represents agency, escape, power, and birth.
