The Collapsed, (2018)
Porcelain and underglaze
I started this body of work during the first trimester of my pregnancy with my daughter. At the time I felt a lot like these pieces: floppy and weak but also full of life and a determination to prevail. I start the process for these sculptures from thin porcelain sheets, which I then twist into three dimensions, forcing them to rear up, or at least sit up. They depict mash-ups of female body parts—breasts, muscles, hips, labia, and arms—with those of ancient Greek vessels: the necks, bottoms, and handles of amphorae and rhytons.
